BERLIN
September 14th 1997
After an early start we arrived in Berlin at 8am Sunday. Nothing was open of course, but at least we missed all the traffic. Christina's Dad very kindly insisted on showing me the city in the few hours before my flight home.
Christina looking a bit cold in front of a rather large clock, TV tower in the background.
We went up the tower, when it opened.
Three working women.
The Brandenburg Gate. Scene of Hitler speaking, and the Wall coming down. Very impressive, although spoilt somewhat nowadays by a road sign underneath it and a taxi rank next to it!
No-man's land was several hundred metres wide right through the centre of Berlin - so there are currently quite a few cranes at work there.
Checkpoint Charlie is going to be some kind of museum I believe. The whole of Berlin and Eastern Germany is being rebuilt it seemed, even though the war was some time ago. Quite depressing it has taken so long for the money to become available.
So, back to the UK, via excellent British Airways, and dreadful Virgin trains!
