IONA

Our Scottish pilgrimage

April 2002 we went on out Scottish tour. Starting in Gretna Green - a useful night stop on the way up! Here's Loch Lomond looking exquisite:

Lake Placid!

Vikings sailed up Loch Lomond as they attacked Scotland. Here is a Viking grave in a churchyard at Loch Lomond.

A pretty Scottish castle

Ducks get everywhere!
Coronation Street - why?

Named after a famous womble?
Tobermory is the capital town on Mull, with its cutely painted shop fronts. I wouldn't recommend the distillery tour however - it lasts about four minutes!

Another ferry across to Iona itself! It was a little rainy when we arrived, but soon brightened up. Iona is famous for Saint Columba who landed here from Ireland and built a monastery.

Wet rain! You can see the Abbey dominating the skyline in this photo.
Wet wet wet

Iona Cottage was to be our B&B after some hours of searching. It's here in the centre of the picture:

That kettle's boiling!
Ste next to the Spouting Cave, on Iona.
The golf course! (no really)

Staffa was where Mendelson wrote his Hebridian Overture. It was a short trip from Iona.
Cave ahoy!

Whoosh...
Here's the cave. Brilliant, really.

The only way out of here - the ferry stops at 6pm and the visitors stop for another day!
A sad place a few years ago.

Goodbye for now...
