ISTANBUL - MOSQUES

Still so much more to see!

Mosques are everywhere to see and hear. The minaret towers with their speakers compete against each other at least 5 times a day. They are pleasantly empty of objects inside compared to Christian churches. Remember to take your shoes off before you go in, but don't step on the outside doormat to put your shoes on else you will be told off! I didn't of course.

Mecidiye Mosque with Judith, (Silver) Sergian, Nesli and Nesli's friend (sorry forgotten your name! -tell me Nagi!!)

Haghia Sophia Church here is 1400 years old. It is giant inside, was really interesting to walk around slowly.

Suleymaniye Mosque stands above the Golden Horn river. It was built in 1550, designed by architect Sinan for sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. It contains the the Tomb of Suleyman.

Sinan designed 131 mosques and 200 other buildings in his lifetime.

This photo was taken from the bridge over the Golden Horn.

Blue Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Ahmed Camii in 1609. With 6 minarets instead of the usual 5. Each minaret has 2 or 3 balconies. The mosque has blue tilework inside, explaining why it is called the Blue Mosque.
