3 - South Island
Not so many people and a bit more rugged than the North Island.
Franz Joseph Glacier |
Typical homestead. Most older houses are made from wood.
Summer 2004 in N.Z. wasn't the best, with floods and storm force winds. It was good to have summer in February though! |
Unfeasibly large mushrooms, like you read about in fairy tales.Something for Pierre D.G to cook perhaps?! We also found drunken wasps in the woods. They drink the alcohol which oozes from the trees, and fly down to the ground. |

Motel. They cost about 25 GB pounds ( 35 Euro) per night and are spacious and clean. The hire car was only 17 GB pounds per day (24 Euro). Right hand drive of course - they are imported from Japan second hand. You drive on the left in New Zealand. |
Pancake Rocks. Geologists don't know how they were formed.
A very nice restaurant that we didn't have time to visit. Sea on both sides. Supposed to be very pleasant at sunset. |
Hot water beach. Boiling water oozes up from the sand at low tide. You can dig a hole and have a warm bath. See photo!
Picton. Our ferry from the North island landed here. A quaint little town. We thought is was just a village at first - but it's one the bigger settlements on the South Island. 4000 people live in Picton... |
Puddings. Even tastier than they look! Always excellent and big... |
That was New Zealand. Great place. Very friendly people. Visit it if you can. Pity it's not nearer to Europe..
