PRAGUE
September 12th 1997
Gert overslept but fortunately I awoke and we caught the tram into town and then a train to Prague - city of Jana.
We left Prague station and realised we had no money, no map, and no idea where to find the centre of Prague. Christina had the brilliant idea to read the tram-stop map, and follow the tramlines into the centre.
After about an hour's walking along concrete bridges, dual carriageways, and some doubtful moments, we found the centre and it was brill! I thought it seemed to be more eastern than western in architecture, but I have been since informed by a certain Czech that it is actually gothic - OK.
Jana's clothes style is quite typical in Czech.
(Thanks to David who taught me this photo technique - shooting from the hip)
The churches were spectacular, but all closed for renovation too. I found that hard to believe to be honest - every single church!!
We stopped at a bar, in an incredibly cool and refreshing courtyard, for lemonade.
Some people say Prague is being ruined because of tourism - but I found it fascinating anyway.
McDonald's can be depended upon for toilets wherever you are in the world - although at this one you had to pay! The ice cream was delicious though.
We couldn't work out how to pay for the tram, so we just got on and got off near the train station. A friendly American totally confused us but eventually we made to the train station, although the chaos didn't end there…
Unfortunately, the train stopped for an hour and we missed the last train connection to Dresden. But they ordered us a taxi and all was good.
This is Christina's dog, by the way. It had a hard life.
